How to Prepare the Motherboard for Install

Step 3 of Building your Own PC

This article will cover the prepare the motherboard tutorial.

The first step in mounting the motherboard in the case is to determine where the standoffs will go.

If the case has a motherboard tray remove it.

Observing ESD safety precautions, hold the motherboard by it’s edges and place it on the tray.

Notice which holes line up with the holes on the tray.

Do Not put any standoffs on the tray that do not line up with the holes on the motherboard.

Extra standoffs in the wrong spot could short out your motherboard since they are at chassis ground. This could lead to a dead motherboard!

The procedure if you have a case without a tray is the same.
Holding the motherboard by it’s edges tilt it at a 45 degree angle and lower the motherboard’s back ports into the I/O shield opening.

Once this is done lower the front edge of the board down slowly. This can be accomplished a lot easier with the power supply out of the case.

Note the holes that match up with your motherboard and reverse the procedure to remove the motherboard. You are now ready to install the standoffs. Next is how to install cpu on the motherboard.
