How the Google AdSense Program Works

Advertisers and Adwords

An advertiser uses the Google AdWords program to create advertisements for their products and services. These advertisements appear on Google search results pages and on websites that have included Google Adsense code in their pages .

Advertisers bid on the cost of the ad with other advertisers using a cost-per-click formula. When Adsense ads are clicked by site visitors, a percentage of the amount that the advertiser pays Google for displaying the ad is then shared with you.

For example, if an advertiser pays Google $1.00 for the click, you receive a percentage of that amount. The actual percentage of the advertising cost you receive is not advertised but some estimates are as high as 40 to 50 percent. Certainly 40 cents on a one dollar click doesn’t seem like much, but with a few thousand visitors a day to your site, your AdSense revenue could be paying you as much as 20 to 50 dollars per week — which is not too bad considering you don’t have to do anything other than place Google AdSense ads on your site (and, of course, get lots of visitors).

Site Owners and AdSense

When you apply to the Google Adsense program, you will be able to login and generate small pieces of code that you can easily insert into your pages. When your site visitor lands on one of your pages that contains this code, the small pieces of code pull ads from the Google servers to display in your page. If your site visitor clicks on one of the displayed ads, you earn Adsense revenue.

Setting up your site to display Google Adsense ads is so simple “a caveman can do it” — to borrow a phrase from the Geico. It takes no technical skill other than copy and paste, which is why most sites you visit contain these ads. However, to get quality ads to show on your page (the ones that pay you more) does take technical skill.

Here is a simple four step process with pictures to show you how easy it is to add Adsense code into your web pages.

  • Login to your Adsense account and generate the Adsense code you will need to paste into your pages.
  • Open the web page that you want to display with your favorite text editor or web design tool and locate the position and set your cursor where you want to paste the Javascript Adsense code.
  • Paste the Adsense code into the HTML where you want the ads to appear and save the page.
  • Replace the web page on the server that is hosting your web site.

Using your browser, navigate to the web page into which Adsense code has been inserted to view the ads. It might take the Google ad server several minutes to adjust to the content on your page in order to show more relevant ads  for more information about optimizing your pages.
